Medicare Eligibility
The Medicare Eligibility For The Spouse Of A Retiree
We will send a letter approximately three months prior to the employee’s and/or spouse’s 65th birthday to remind them that at age 65 they will become eligible for Medicare health insurance benefits.
The retiree and/or spouse must apply for Medicare Parts A and B. Even if the retiree and/or spouse do not apply for Medicare when eligible, we will pay claims as if Medicare is the primary insurer and the Trust is the secondary insurer.
We will change the employee’s health plan to the appropriate premium rate classification effective the first day of the month in which the employee and/or spouse reach age 65. If the subscriber’s birth date is on the first of the month, Medicare is effective the first of the prior month. If dependent children are covered, however, the employee’s health plan will remain in a standard family premium rate classification.
